From 2012 to 2015, he served as the head coach of Japan, who stunned South Africa in the 2015 Rugby World Cup. England won the 2016 and 2017 Six Nations Championships under Jones’ direction, becoming just the second international rugby team to finish a whole year unbeaten.

Jones was appointed head coach of England in November 2015. He guided England to the 2019 Rugby World Cup final when South Africa defeated them.

Matraville Sports High School was the starting point of Jones’ playing career. Between 1981 and 1991, he played hooker for Randwick and New South Wales.

In 1989, Jones participated for New South Wales B in a match against the British and Irish Lions. He additionally made three appearances for Leicester in England’s 1991–1992 season.

He took retirement to focus on a career as a teacher and school administrator.

Jones was teaching geography at the International Grammar School in Sydney when he met his wife Hiroko in the early 1990s.

Hiroko, who was also teaching Japanese at the school, became a close friend of his. Jones is half-Japanese, having been born to an Australian father and a Japanese American mother.

After winning the 2001 Tri Nations, Jones led Australia into the 2003 home World Cup as the third-favorite team, behind New Zealand and England.

They defeated the All Blacks in the semifinal matchup but fell to England in the championship game after extra time due to a last-second drop goal.
